Jolie Brise arriving at Teignmouth

In 2017 the Jolie Brise will be participating in the International Rendez-vous Tall Ships Regatta. The race starts in Torquay on 16th April 2017 and the first leg is to Portugal, the second leg is to Bermuda arriving there on 3rd June 2017. The race will finish in the Gulf of St Lawrence on 10th July 2017. Three local young people have been selected to take part in the first leg of the race.

The Mayor, Councillor Terry Falcão arranged with Dauntsey’s School based in Wiltshire for the young people to take part in the race. The school is the custodian of the Jolie Brise tall ship which visited Teignmouth in May 2016.

Councillor Falcão said ‘Following on from a conversation with Clare McComb, a relative of one of the crew who visited Teignmouth recently for the celebrations of the original rebuild of the Jolie Brise, and Toby Marris, the skipper of the Jolie Brise, there have been a number of further discussions to make possible a unique initiative to give three of our young people the opportunity of a lifetime. What is wonderful is the generosity of both Dauntsey’s for offering the three places, and Wetherspoons by offering to raise funds for the fees which might otherwise have been an obstacle to some candidates.’

Chris Martin, Manager of the Wetherspoons pub, The Jolie Brise said ‘This is an amazing opportunity for three young people from Teignmouth. Not only will they have a truly unbelievable time but they will gain some incredible life skills that will put them in great stead for the future. We are extremely proud to be a part of this adventure and look forward to supporting the Mayor in this unique opportunity’.
